In our opinion, many internet marketers make a common mistake of leaving the back link building process up to so called “link building sites”. And this is often done at a price that is sometimes overly expensive without a corresponding value for the investment.

You can see ads all over the place – PR5 links for $150, or PR3 links for $79. But that should raise red flags concerning what does that really mean, and better yet, what does that get you for the investment.

For example, let’s look at some popular link building sites that are advertised on the Warrior Forum which is quickly becoming a cesspool of spammers and carnival barkers. On that site you will often see ads from “Angela’s backlinks” where you can subscribe to get monthly updates from Angela on where to build links.

A few months ago I decided to bite the bullet and subscribe to see just what she was selling regarding the link building sites she proposed. Well after two months of the same garbage I quickly cancelled my subscription because the only thing she was “selling” was detailed instructions on how to register at various websites to get backlinks from registering forum user profiles. And that is what they call high quality backlinks?

Now what good value is there really in having a user profile link from an unrelated website’s forum user profile – even though they are high page rank sites. Do you not think that Google is smarter than that? Is the secret to internet marketing success really just spamming forum profiles?

And this is just one example of how scam artists are working hard to separate unsuspecting people from their money, offering little value in return for the money they invest.

The internet is quickly replacing other forms of printed media such as newspapers, magazines, newsletters, etc. It is natural then that online advertising costs continue to rise because of the ubiquitous nature of the internet – it is basically impossible to avoid as the internet is now everywhere you turn. Whether it is in business systems, on our mobile phones or hotspots all over city landscapes, the internet is available at every turn.

Advertisers wants to spend their money where the people are getting their information. At one time in the not so distant past, that meant traditional print, radio and television advertising because that is where the eyeballs were. For example, in today’s world newspapers and magazines are reporting lower circulation rates and are seeing their advertising rates dwindle – advertisers do not want to continue spending top advertising dollars where they do not get a positive return on investment.

We are not saying that print advertising will disappear, it is simply a matter of advertisers becoming more selective about where to spend the money. Another example might be the yellow pages – why continue to invest in advertising space that fewer and fewer people are seeing.

The advertising opportunities with the internet are endless as the number of websites and quality of content continue to rapidly rise. There are almost endless ways to advertise and in the traditional sense of online advertising there are four different methods:

Cost per click or pay per click – In theory this makes a lot of sense and many advertisers buy ads on the search engines. The advertising costs incur each time a search engine user clicks on one of the ads. This is very effective for companies that do extensive research on the search terms to target and for those that are willing to budget a lot of money. Be aware though, this can get quite expensive very quickly.
Banner ads on high-traffic websites – These are typically priced on a per impression basis. While your ads might get a lot of exposure – and certainly some click throughs – banner ads do not seem to be an effective advertising model in today’s market, especially if they are delivered in pop-ups which are intrusive to readers.
Cost per action ads – These are just what they say, there is a cost when a certain action is taken. That might be signing up for a newsletter, clicking through to a sales landing page and other call to action that results in some interaction with the prospect.
Cost per lead ads – This is one of the most effective methods of traditional online advertising because at least there is a lead that comes out of the experience. Of course measuring the effectiveness of the lead generating strategy is very important to see if the leads that are generated are “good” leads.

From our perspective though, none of these online advertising strategies provide the best return for the online advertising costs that are incurred. Our preferred method is search engine marketing:

Targeted prospects – If search engine users find your website because of a keyword search, you can bet that they are a warm lead. This is much better than someone randomly clicking through on a banner ad for curiosity reasons.
Targeted message – Because the visitor finds your website through a targeted keyword search, you can tailor the message on the landing page that you direct them to. This allows you to provide a highly targeted message to highly targeted prospects which will certainly provide high value to the website visitor.
Build branding awareness – Building a search engine brand is very important to your online marketing success. This is done by the keywords you target that are important to the industries that you serve.
Long term value – The branding of your search engine presence builds long term value for your website because once you have established search engine position for your targeted keywords, you “own” that market. This will ensure that search engine users that want information on those keyword terms will continue to find your website and provide long term traffic growth.
Lower online advertising costs – While search engine marketing carries some upfront start-up costs over the long term it provides the best value because you will have established your presence for the keyword terms you are targeting.

Part of any SEO implementation should be a thorough SEO competitor analysis to understand the landscape of the market you want to approach and the keywords you want to target. There could literally be hundreds if not thousands of websites going after the same market that you are so it comes down to, who has the better optimized website. And to beat your competition for having the best optimized website you have to understand what your competitors are doing with their website.

SEO competitor analysis can mean many things to many people, but there is fundamental competitive information that should always be considered:

What keywords is your competition targeting – This can easily be discovered by looking at the source code of their website or pages and viewing the meta title, description and keyword tags. Now of course this does not always work because there are some a) very mis-informed internet marketers who think these meta tags are not important and b) very unknowledgeable internet marketers who do not understand SEO enough to understand what needs to be done to rank high in the search engines.
What other unintended keywords are they getting organic search results – Most websites rank for keyword terms they never intended because their on-page content sometimes is enough to rank higher than other pages. The best method I have found to find organic keywords for a competition site is a product called SEMRush that allows you to peek inside of a competitors site to see keywords that they rank in top twenty positions in Google. This data is very beneficial for two reasons: a) better understand how your competition ranks in the search engines and b) new ideas for keywords that you should be targeting.
How many backlinks have your competition obtained – This can be somewhat difficult to find although there are several tools that allow high level analysis. I use the free version of Majestic SEO but I question how accurate it is because the numbers sometimes bounce up and down, but overall it provides a good indication of the how many backlinks a site has obtained.
Where do those back links come from for a competitors website – This is even more difficult to find, but the best tool I have found is Market Samurai (which is ironically better known as the best keyword mining tool). The SEO Competition module in Market Samurai provides the websites that hold the top 10 positions in Google for a specific keyword. You can then drill into the page rank and anchor text analysis where you can find detailed information for the top 1000 links for a website – the back link URL, the back link anchor text, the back link page rank, and more. This is very useful competitive information to have and has another great benefit – you can also use this information to find new places to create a backlink to your website.
What type of content have they created – Viewing your competitors’ websites can be quite enlightening because you can quickly see if they understand the subject and provide enough detail for the reader or if they are just putting up spammy websites. It also provides a glimpse into how well they understand SEO because you can analyze their back internal linking strategy.
Are they precisely targeting the same market as you – This can have a big differnece on your competitive SEO strategy. If there a lot of competitors going after the exact same market, then your SEO strategy will have to be “crisper” than the competition. It might be that they are going after a similar market and just getting the beneficiary of collateral page ranking because no other pages have been optimized. That is where opportunity lies.

Part of every SEO process that we manage with our clients is doing a competitor website analysis for the top ten competing sites. SEO costs for his project exceeded $7500 over a five-month period and at first there was very little payback on the investment. SEMRush – This is a good complimentary product to Market Samurai because it adds some features not provided by Market Samurai, but with the combination of both of them, you have just about every angle of keyword research covered. SEMRush provides very good keyword research, but goes much further than that. What I like about SEMRush the most is the competitive analysis that I can obtain with this tool. For example, I can look ‘inside’ my competitors website to see which words they have organic rank for, how much search engine traffic they get from those keywords, and much more. SEMRush is another very useful keyword research software tool.

These products are what I would call ‘teir two’ keyword research software solutions:

Keyword Winner – This is a very nice WordPress plugin that provides keyword research while you are writing your article. Simply type in the article title and hit the search button, and Keyword Winner will start generating a list of potential keywords to use. This plugin then returns a number of keywords which are color coded green, yellow and red – for easy, moderate and difficult keywords. It also provides other relevant data such as number of backlinks using that keyword, number of competing pages, and much more. I use Keyword Winner a lot when writing WordPress articles because it keeps me on the right track to pick article titles that have great keyword relevance.

Niche Finder – First of all, this product is produced by Brad Callen. And anything that is provided by Brad is typically a very good product. Niche Finder is not a pure keyword finder such as Market Samurai because it does not provide the same level detailed information. But what it really does well is to find the long tail keywords that are provided by the keyword stem. Niche Finder is a great addition and I use it often when trying to penetrate a new niche market where I need to rank well for the long tail keywords that draws visitors to a specialty niche website.

With the recent Google Panda update, there is a lot of confusion over the current Google ranking factors and where you should concentrate your SEO investment. After doing much research from some of the most reputable SEO providers in the industry, I have come to the conclusion that there are five major Google ranking factors.

Now that does not mean that other forms of SEO optimization are not important, because I am a firm believer that good SEO ranking is the sum of doing a lot of little things right instead of doing just one or two things right. This article will provide details on the five SEO factors that we think are critical and summary information on other areas to also concentrate.

Here are the five Google ranking factors from our analysis:

domain age – This is a tough one to handle because it means that new websites have to bide their time to earn the high ranking search engine positions for the targeted keywords. But it is very obvious from our research that domains with a high domain age get the benefit of the doubt from the search engines when there is no clear cut ‘best’ choice. Our recommendations to owners of new websites is very simple. While your domain is aging, add as much content as possible and build as many backlinks as you can. This ensures that as your domain ages, it will be well established for the targeted keywords you are pursuing.
page rank – Another tough one for new websites because again, it takes time to build page rank in the search engines. And once again, the best advice is just as it is above, because that is the formula for earning a higher page rank. Get on a regular schedule to add content when possible and and take the steps to generate a solid back link building program. This is a self-fulfilling prophecy – doing these tasks on a routine basis will get you noticed by the search engines, which will have the spiders crawling your website on a regular basis, which will in turn allow your website to grow notoriety on the internet. As the combination of content, back links and domain aging naturally occur, your Google page rank will start to grow.
on page optimization – Yes, this is still very important to the search engines and the task should be simple to understand. For every page of content that is published on your website, every step to properly do on page optimization should be completed. The three areas that Matt Cutts from Google has recently stated are important are:

title tag – Make sure that the title tags for each targeted page has a keyword specific title tag. The title tag is the first content that the search engines see when they spider your page and it is important for them to immediately see the keyword you are targeteding for that page.
meta description tag – Matt Cutts specifically mentioned that the meta description tag has become more important because this tag is meant to be used to provide the search engine users (and the spiders) a summary of what this page is about. Too many people use the meta description tag to stuff a bunch of keywords. If this describes what you are doing, then you should concentrate more on providing a good concise summary of the page. Think about it like this. Google wants to provide the user with a good search experience. Since the meta description tag is returned during the search and is displayed right below the website link, Google wants to present websites that accurately describe the page contents.
keyword relevant content – The last piece of on page optimization is to make sure that the content is relevant to keyword you are targeting. So this means that you should focus on making sure that the page title, the meta description tag, and the page content are all focused on the targeted keyword.

internal linking structure = If you are using a blog platform as your website, this is automatically taken care of by the blogging platform. If you have a traditional website, then this is something you need to concentrate on a little more. But the goal of this step is to provide an easy to navigate website for both the users and the spiders. From a search engine optimization perspective, it is very important that the spiders can navigate through all pages of your site and that proper links with anchor text helps point the spiders to what you consider to be the important pages on your website.
backlinks from other websites – Although this is listed last, it is not the least important. In fact, it might be the most important because it tells the search engines that your site is important enough for other websites to provide a link back to your website. When done right by using good keyword relevant anchor text and finding large numbers of high value links, your search engine ranking can be dramatically improved.

These five items represent what we believe to be the top give Google ranking factors to rank your website in the search engines.

The following are items that have been important in the past, and all indications are that they are not as important as they once were. This article is not to imply that you should not do any of these because the sum of the parts really is important to achieve high search engine positioning.

exact match domains
content length
keyword density
meta keywords tag
Facebook likes or links

Again, we are not saying that these not important at all for Google ranking factors, but they are not as important as they were before the Panda update.

While the sole focus of your website is not just rankings, it sure is important to understand the rules of the game and the Google ranking factors you should pursue.

Keyword research is such an important factor of any SEO initiative because it is so fundamental to to the success of your website. Select ‘good’ keywords and half the battle is won. So it would seem obvious that tracking the success of your keywords ranking in the search engines would be something that would need to be done on a regular basis.

Too many internet marketers make several mistakes when it comes to keywords. Lacking the necessary keyword research tools, many internet marketers simpply guess at which keywords to target, never having an idea if they will provide the traffic they need or if they are too competitive to ever get proper page rankings.

Then they follow up that mistake by not tracking how they rank for those keywords. So they start with a shot in the dark, making best guesses about the keywords and follow that up by not analyzing their marketing campaign for those keywords. No wonder 95% of all internet marketers never make any money.

Getting better Google positioning is the result of implementing a consistent and steady search engine optimization strategy. There are no quick fixes for SEO and there are no shortcuts – so do not believe any of the hype that you read about on the internet. If there are any back doors into Google, you can bet that those doors are shut down as quickly as possible.

The only proven methods of SEO that reliable improves your Google positioning is an SEO process of doing market research, creating fresh and unique content and building contextual back links. If you follow this process for all of the keywords you want to target then your search engine positions will continue to grow.

The proper SEO process is well documented on this website and at many other websites on the internet. But the following are items that you can do to improve Google positioning and your website rankings:

On Site Optimization – This should really be called ‘proper use of keywords’:

Keywords in the title tag – This is probably the number one mistake most internet marketers make. Google has stated that they value the title tag more than any other meta tag. So that means if you build a page about ‘polka dot widgets’ use that keyword in the title tag to tell Google what this page is about since they have stated that it has the most impact on getting good Google positioning for the keyword. Listen to what Google says and follow their direction.
Keywords in your URL – Always include the keyword in the URL if possible. If you are using a blog then this is very easy to do because the title of the article becomes the URL. So to point #1 above, using the keyword in the title automatically puts the keyword in the URL. So by following this strategy you have just improved your chances of getting good Google positioning for that specific keyword.
Keywords in meta description tag – Matt Cutts from Google recently stated that proper use of the meta description tag is becoming more important for Google when they determine page rankings for a keyword. He specifically mentioned that the description tag should not be a place just to stuff a bunch of keywords and but should include beneficial content to the user doing the search since that is the what they see on the search engine results page. Common sense prevails here on the use of this tag – tell the search engines what the page in about in a short summary.
Keywords in meta keywords tag – In the same interview, Matt Cutts stated that they really did not pay much attention to the meta keywords tag because it had so overused in the past with websites that stuffed this tag with a bunch of keywords. He recommended that using the keywords tag would still be considered if used properly with 2-3 very relevant keywords.
Keywords in your header (H1, H2, H3 …) tags – And once again, n the same interview, Google also mentioned that header tags were very important. It really makes sense if you think about it. The header tags are big and bold and bring the readers attention to the heading text. So it makes sense that the search engines would see the use of the header tags as important words for the page.
Keyword relevant content – You should use keyword relevant content in the content that you post on your page. There is no need to go crazy and stuff a bunch of keywords, they should be used in the normal flow of the article. In our opinion, keyword density should kept low, not to exceed 3%-5%, In a 300 word article using the keyword 4-7 times should be more then enough.

Pretty simple so far, right?

Off Site Optimization – There are books written about this, but simply there is also a need for ‘offsite’ optimization, which allows your website to build notoriety on the internet for your targeted keywords. This done primarily by building back links – lots and lots of them – using the target keywords as your ‘anchor text’ pointing back to the page you want to improve Google positioning. This in turn tells the the search engines what that page really is about and helps you build authority for that page. You can build back links from article directories, website directories, social bookmarking websites, blog posting, forum posting, and much more. Building backlinks is pretty simple process really, but takes a lot of time and effort.

SEO is definitely worth the effort because it provides a stream of free traffic to your website if you are successful. Achieving good Google positioning for the keywords you want to target takes consistent effort of following the right SEO process.

While the rules of SEO continue to change, the fundamentals remain the same as they have always been – a) generate fresh, unique keyword content, b) optimize your pages for the keywords that you are targeted, c) and build many keyword relevant links back to the page. That is the definition of SEO ‘properly done’ and is sure to improve your Google positioning.

What is organic SEO – sounds it should be difficult but in reality it is sort of easy once you understand what is involved. Too many people try to make it more difficult than it really is, when the answer is quite simple. Organic SEO is simply the result of following a standard set of SEO processes that provides natural rankings in the search engines. Natural rankings are obtained by implementing the SEO steps to improve visibility of your website in the search engines.

Webpodia defines organic seo as follows:

Organic SEO (search engine optimization) is the phrase used to describe processes to obtain a natural placement on organic search engine results pages (SERPs).

So understanding what is organic SEO means that you must understand the processes that must be followed with an SEO project.

First, there are a lot of scams in the marketplace, people trying to sell push button SEO solutions that guarantee top rankings in twenty-four hours, or generate thousands of back links over night! Do you really think that is possible? And if it was, do you really think the search engines would allow gaming of their system for people to cheat their way up the search engine rankings? Definitely not.

In fact, the search engines want to provide the user with the best possible experience, and in the case of searches, that means returning the most highly rated websites with the best relevant content for the search term that was entered. Websites that achieve top rankings usually get there by a systematic method to build authority, and if done correctly, allows them to maintain their top positions.

Doing SEO the right way – naturally and organically – takes a lot of hard work. There are several steps to the organics SEO process as follows:

keyword research – This is the starting point of your SEO campaign and the objective is to find the best keywords to find the types of website visitors you want to attract. So that means that, obviously, your keywords have to be representative of the products you sell or the services you provide. This is the first part of keyword research and will generate thousands of potential targteted keywords. After the initial list is created, the challenge becomes to find a small subset of those keywords that provide enough traffic but are not too competitive. So the goal basically is to find keywords that you can get top ranking quickly. competitive analysis – Part of the keyword research is doing a compeitive anlaysis for the keywords as the final keyword list is being finalized. The competitive analysis is so important that we want to make it a separate point. During this step the goal is to take the shortened list and shorten it even more. The initial keyword research might return 25, 50, 100 or even more potential keywords. Out of these, you want to find the absolute best keywords. Again, Market Samurai provides a great tool called SEO Competition that lets you look inside the websites of the top 10 ranking sites on Google for a specific keyword. With this information you can analyze how competitive the keyword will be, and determine what will be required to achieve top rankings. A very powerful feature! (See SEO Competitive Analysis)
content creation – Unfortunately, there is no tool for this. Content is king on the internet and if you are serious about organic SEO you better like to write content. Because this is what separates the winners from the losers. The winners add a continuous stream of keyword relevant content to their website or blog while the losers add content rarely or never and the website has no chance to rank in the search engines. Besides the on site content, there is also a need to create vast amounts of off-page content in places like article submissions, Web 2.0 sites, social media sites, forums, blogs, etc. Which leads to the next point. building backlinks – And the final ingredient for organic SEO is building backlinks. The more you build, the better your website will perform in the search engines. But quantity is not the only thing to consider, as quality is just as – if not more – important. Getting a bunch of links from a large number of PR0 sites are good, but getting a few links from PR3, PR4, PR5, PR6 and higher sites are even better. Personally I like a good mix and I try to build backlinks at as many different places as possible. But remember, a PR2 link is not two times better than a PR1 link, it is 10 times better. So find high quality, high page rank back links wherever possible (See SEO Build Backlinks).

So that is it, that is the answer to the question ‘what is organic SEO’. Most people try to make it really difficult but it is not. What it is though is very time and labor intensive.

We talk to a number of small companies, and it is obvious that very few of them have a website marketing plan. Some might think they have a plan, they throw a few hundred or few thousand dollars at pay per click advertising, some even buy SEO services. But very few of them have a website marketing plan.

We just did a project for a small industrial company that gets most of their leads from a paper-based directory that has been printed in their industry for many, many years. It is quite expensive to advertise in this directory but for many years it was worth the expense of purchasing an ad. But even in the industrial world, times are changing, and many of their potential clients are now going online. So suddenly, this 25+ year company is losing market share because their business has changed to an online environment with new competitors that have entered the market.

This comment from the owner sums up their search engine ranking position. He said,”the only traffic we get to our website is from people that already know about us”. So even though they have several factors working in their favor – an established website on an aged domain, with great content and even a fair amount of backlinks, they are not getting any traffic. The reason become obvious once we began the initial SEO audit – from an SEO perspective, nothing really had ever been done on their website. The result was that their website was buried so far down in the search engines that it was impossible to find.

There are many companies that find themselves in a similar situation – they have nice websites, great content, and every other available bell and whistle. Everything that is except traffic.

For this particular client, the initial website marketing plan was simple, and included the following:

As with any SEO project, we started with keyword research to find the best possible keywords
After the keyword list was established, existing pages were optimized for the targeted keywords where possible
New content pages were created for targeted keywords that were found but where no content existed
To build a mailing list we developed a lead capture page to collect name, address, email and phone numbers for newsletters and other special offers
Added a blog to the existing website so that new, fresh content could be added on a regular basis
Established a social network presence and started submitting content to social bookmarking sites
Began an effort to post online press releases on a consistent basis when there was news-worthy information available
Started syndicating the blog content to RSS feeds and other syndication options to spread the content and to spread back links
Established a consistent link building strategy to target pages on the website

During the initial phase, the goal was to get the website properly indexed in the search engines and start building page rank for the targeted keywords. This was a great improvement as now at least people who were searching for a particular keyword phrase could at least the client’s website and make contact. The next step is to migrate to an ecommerce platform, add lots of original video content, become much more active in social networking, and more.

The primary point to note is that a website marketing plan takes time to implement and will always be a moving target. The most important thing to is get started with a website marketing plan and let it evolve over time as your needs and budget require.

Understanding how to check backlinks is very important if you want to be able to monitor your progress with your SEO program. There are many free ways to do this, if you are only looking for a ‘number’. But if you are wanting to analyze the backlinks you will need to purchase a professional tool that provides detailed analysis.

The free backlink checkers leave a lot to be desired. Most of these programs only provide back link counts to the root domain and you have to wade through ads and other marketing messages to actually get to the numbers they are reporting, not to mention the popup ads. Some even try to force a download of some utility to get the results!

Another problem with the free programs is that they are not very consistent in reporting the number of backlinks you have. Go to different free back link checker sites and you will get different results. Some provide such basic information that it is not hardly even usable. Unless of course you upgrade to their special program that will give you all the details for a low monthly cost.

I say, do not even waste your time with these because there really is no value in the numbers that these free programs provide.

This all-purpose SEO tool provides a ton of functionality, including keyword research, keyword competitive analysis, rank tracking of your keywords and targeted pages, domain searches for keywords, and much more – including tracking backlinks.

Now if you have been wanting to learn how to check backlinks, you are going to love Market Samurai. Although backlink checking is not a separate component of the software, there are two main ways that Market Samurai helps you keep track of your backlinks.

Secondly, also within the SEO Competition module, there is a PR Analysis feature that is brilliant! This module does a real-time analysis of your backlinks and reports on several critical pieces of data:

Number of backlinks by page rank of the linking website – in other words, you can see how many links you have from PR0 websites, from PR1 websites, etc. all the way up to PR10
The anchor text that is used for your backlinks with a count of the total number of instances a particular keyword anchor text is used
Details of the anchor text by PR site – for example you will see how many anchor text links for each PR site that is providing a link

One of the first places to start an SEO campaign is to check rank in Google for the keywords that you are targeting, especially if your website has been established for a while. You may find a pleasant surprise or an unpleasant surprise but at least you know where you stand before going any further with the SEO project.

So what is the best to way to check rank in google for your keywords? One way to do it is manually by entering your keywords and then paging through Google until you find your website. This can take hours of tedious work and is not recommended unless you have a lot of time and a lot of patience.

There are a couple of websites that we found which offer free tools to check rank in google that you can use, you can find them here:

We also found this program called Cuterank that is a free desktop utility that offers a quick glimpse at your page rankings for your targeted keywords. This is a very cool utility if all you want to do is check rank in google.

In our opinion, knowing how you rank for your targeted keywords is a cornerstone of optimizing your website. All of your daily SEO focus should be knowing where you rank and doing everything possible to improve those rankings. It really is simple to understand – without knowing how you currently rank, how can you build an SEO strategy to improve your rank?

With that said, since being able to check rank in google is so important, we believe that a more powerful and robust solution should be considered. These free products – while nice utilities that give you a quick glimpse of how you rank – do not offer the functionality that is required to really manage your SEO rankings.

the page rank of the ranking page
the actual data for each of the rankings listed above

There are definitely some technical aspects to search engine optimization and it is very important that these technical issues are implemented correctly, things like title tags, meta tags, header tags, keyword density, etc. Using the right methods of SEO is the science of SEO. But there is also an intuitiveness to SEO that only comes from multiple years of experience and lessons learned along the way – to where you really understand the SEO fundamentals and how they should be implemented.

The good news is that this goal can be achieved through consistent and diligent work. The bad news is that your competition is working just as hard to achieve the same goals. How Many Keywords Should I Use

A lot of people get confused over ‘how many keywords should I use’ on a website. My answer is very simple – use as many keywords as you possibly can to create individual keyword-relevant content pages. That is the whole basis of building out a keyword rich website.

I write articles just about every day for my websites, of which there are 4-5 that I write content on a constant basis. Some days it is easier than others but I try to force myself to continually post content. This is because the search engines love fresh, new, unique content. And the more often they find fresh, new and unique content, the more often they come back to spider your website again. That has a lot of added value to your search engine rankings and the number of pages that are indexed.

When I start a new blog or website, I do extensive keyword research that can go on for days or even weeks. The primary tool that I use for the keyword research is Market Samurai which allows me to start with a seed keyword and continue to drill down into other keyword phrases that it returns. This is very powerful and there are instances where I may go through thousands of keywords to settle on the ones I want to promote.

The goal is to generate a massive list of keywords that can be used in a variety of ways. For example, out of the analysis I select 3-5 main keywords that I want to use as the primary keywords for the home page of my website. There are a number of different criteria that I use for selecting these keywords, but the biggest issue is that they should provide good traffic, have reasonable competition and fit very well with the overall theme of the website. I then ‘scrub’ the remainder of the keywords and hopefully end up with 50 or more keywords that I can use to optimize individual pages with the keywords as the main keyword and title of those individual pages.

The result of this strategy is that as I consistently build out the content and the search engines keep indexing each individual page that is optimized for those keywords, the domain build high SEO value for the collective group of related keywords that are being used. This creates a very powerful search engine optimized website for the main keywords that are being targeted at the domain level.

So I do not get concerned with how many keywords should I use on the website. In fact, it is just the opposite – I want to find as many related keywords as possible so that I can start building out as many optimized pages as possible.

Now I understand that some people really mean, how keywords ‘per page’ should I use and that what I wrote above does not address their question. So here goes on that response …

The number of keywords that should be used for any single page is 3-5 in my estimation. In fact, I prefer to just use one primary keyword and throw in one or two long tail variations of the keyword just to add a little extra SEO juice to the article. So if I am writing about dog training, I may throw some references of ‘dog training collars’, or ‘dog training videos’, or ‘dog training courses’, etc. into the article.

That is just my opinion on how it should be done based on my writing style. I have trouble making any single article keyword relevant for more than one primary keyword but other writers may not have the same issue. In that case, I would still suggest that no more than 3-5 primary keywords should be used in any single article. Spread the keywords around into separate articles which will give you more indexed pages and better optimized pages.

Search engines love keyword relevant content. The better you understand how to do proper keyword research and then apply those keywords that you found into keyword relevant articles, the better your results will be in the search engines.

So my suggestion is not to worry about how many keywords should I use when setting up the website. Just write good content that allows you to provide content that your readers want to find when searching for a specific term that you are promoting.

Unfortunately, too many think that is as simple as pushing a few buttons or subscribing to the next greatest software invention. The reality is that getting to the top of Google takes a lot of hard work, some level of technical skills, a good understanding of how the search engines work, the right software tools to analyze the market and track results, and a whole LOT of patience.

Let’s take a look at these elements in more detail.

hard work – Implementing SEO for a website is a very time intensive and laborious effort. From the time the project starts with keyword research to content creation to building back links, there really are no shortcuts for SEO. A lot of SEO companies promise overnight success or top positions in 30 days but do not believe the hype. You might be able to pull some black hat SEO tricks and amp up your page rankings in the short term, but typically these end up not being very good in the long run. You may also get your website banned. So be prepared to spend days or weeks in keyword research, then writing content on a consistent basis (daily if possible) and never stop building back links. So basically, SEO is a never ending process because while you are taking those top positions, someone else is working just as hard to take them away from you.
technical skills – You do not have to be a programmer to learn how to improve google ranking for your website, but there are some specific technical skills that you will have to learn. For example, you will need to create a hosting account, create databases, load WordPress, write some html code, copy and paste javascript, create anchor text links. and many other technical items. None of them are that difficult to learn and I can tell that seven years ago I did not know how to do any of those things. But it is very important if you are trying to learn the online marketing business you must develop some of these required skills.
understand search engines – Understanding how search engines work is not that difficult – most people try to make it harder to comprehend than it really is. My view of this is very simple: you select targeted keywords for your website, you do certain SEO tactics to optimize your website for those keywords, you write keyword relevant content for your website, you syndicate that content with keyword relevant anchor text links pointing back to the links you want to promote. That is the complete cycle, now you do it over and over on a daily basis for every keyword you want to target. The more content pages you create, the more relevance and notoriety you will gain in the search engines. After following this SEO process for several months, you will start to see that you are figuring out how to improve google ranking for your website.
software tools – Having the right SEO software tools is critical for a successful SEO implementation. There are a number of very good tools available on the internet but there are many more that are simply not worth the money. We have tried numerous software tools and I hate to admit that we have been burned on more than one occaision. We run our SEO business with three primary products: Market Samurai for keyword research, keyword competition analysis and keyword rank tracking SEMRush for extended keyword competition analysis, and Veretekk for content syndication and SEO back link building. That is it, if you purchase these three software tools you can implement SEO yourself for a very nominal amount of money.

It gets very frustrating some times when day after day you are doing the ‘right’ things but not seeing your search engine rankings making any change. In fact if you are tracking your rankings for the first time you might be surprised to see your rankings bounce up and down. But here is the key – a lot of internet marketers stop during this phase and never reach the levels they want to reach. That is why it is important to focus on the core elements of the SEO process and not worry about where your rankings are for at least the first three months after you start your SEO implementation. Sometimes I will not even check my traffic stats or rank tracking stats for a few days or weeks because I do not want to get sidetracked with not seeing the results I want. Take the long term view that doing SEO the right way will provide long term, sustainable success with your search engine rankings.

SEO is a project that never ends and to be successful in the search engines means a continuous commitment to following the SEO fundamentals on a consistent basis. But once you understand how to improve google ranking for the keywords you want to target, you can replicate the process over and over again for any market niche you want to target. Gaining the knowledge on how to improve google ranking is like having the keys to the castle – once you do, the internet becomes much more lucrative for your online business.

Article submissions – There are multiple article submission sites available to submit articles. Backlinks are the most important building blocks to having a good SEO implementation, according to Google which has openly stated that the number one factor into determining search engine ranking is the number of back links that point to a specific page. So it is very important to understand what a backlink is, why they are important, and how you can build as many of them as possible in a ‘white hat’ sort of way. White hat simply means that the back links are built in natural and organic methods of SEO that will gain you high rankings in the search engines.

Backlinks are simply links that come from other websites which are pointed to a specific page on your website. Typically these back links come from a keyword relevant ‘anchor text’ which basically tells the readers and the search engines about the link that you are building. The proper way to build back links is organically and naturally, and usually is something that is accomplished over time. That is why subscribing to a link farm or some of the other outlandish scheme of building thousands of back links overnight are so dangerous to your online business. Search engines want a level playing field and discourage the use of ‘black hat’ techniques such as hidden links, automatic generation of link pages and other types of link farms. Proceed with caution if you are considering to use any of these techniques, because you could get your site completely banned from the search engines.

Let’s examine some methods of building back links:

Article submissions – Still one of the best back link building techniques available are article submissions. There are multiple sites available that you can submit articles, including EzineArticles, GoArticles, ArticlesBase, and many others. By writing a single good and effective article, it will eventually get spread across a wide spectrum of blogs and other websites through the natural syndication process of the article directories. An investment of one hour can turn into hundreds or even thousands of back links over time.
Social bookmarks – This is a very good method of building back links, although some of the social bookmark sites have now changed their links to nofollow. But not all of them have done so, and even in the case of nofollow links, there is great value in putting your content on these sites because of traffic that it can create.
Forums – One of the most common link building techniques is posting comments in forums that allow you to create a profile page and a signature link. The signature links should be built with back links to your website and will included at the bottom of posts or comments you leave in the forum. Although signature links can be low quality it’s one accepted method of building back links. But beaware, these links have little value in the search engines.
Directories – I make great use of directories and while they require a lot of manual effort, they are very useful and carry value because most directories have a high domain age and high page rank. They also allow you to place your links in categories that are relevant to your website, and you can use the anchor text that you choose for the link.
Hubs – Hubs are continuing to grow in popularity in services such as Squidoo. For example, Squidoo hub pages or lenses allow creation of keyword relevant pages where you can place keyword relevant back links to your website. Besides the SEO aspect, hub pages are very useful in building click through traffic to your website.
Blog comments – Posting comments in other people’s blogs is an effective method of building back links, especially if they are relevant to your website. All to often though, blog commenting is used by spammers who have software to automatically post comments across hundreds or thousands of blogs. Used in the correct manner, blog comment posting is valuable in building back links. Used incorrectly, it is nothing but spam that provides no useful benefit.
Link farms – These link farms might be a part of your back link building strategy, but proceed with caution. There are actually many better ways to build links that will not get you banned.

If you happen to be c) a company that offers similar services but are no where to be found on the search engines, that is not good.

The search engines are where the money is for businesses that exploit the technology. It is not enough just to spend thousands of dollars on a beautiful website. The whole process of getting ranked in the search engines is a mystery for most people, and this article will address the question – what is website optimization. We will address the various components of the website optimization process and provide information on SEO tools that will make this process simpler.

There are two components to website optimization. The first is called on-page optimization that addresses the underlying code of the website and is what the search engines see when they ‘spider’ your website. On page elements include title tags, meta tags, header tags, keyword relevant content, and more. The second is off-page optimization which deals with building your website’s presence on the internet. The SEO process we recommend is simple and is built around the following core elements – keyword research, content creation and back link building.

The first golden rule of website optimization is that keywords rule – they are the fundamental building blocks that you use to build your SEO campaign. Making sure that you pick ‘good’ keywords is critical because picking the wrong ones can have catastrophic failure to your online business. Finding the right keywords is an art as much as it is a science.

The process of selecting keywords can vary greatly by target market and in my experience never ends. You must have the mindset that there is another profitable keyword lurking in the cyber bushes and you must have the persistence to find them. And that requires that you have the knowledge on how to do keyword research and the tools that will allow you to do detailed analysis.

I have found that the best way to get started on a keyword research project is to use the free Google Keyword Tool to do a broad search and then continuing to drill down into other words. For example, you might start off with dog training and then drill down into dog training collars, dog training videos, etc. I usually go 6, 7,8 levels deep until I have exhausted all possible keyword phrases. That can result in a list of 3000 or more keywords to analyze. The chances of finding 5,10, 20 or more keywords to target are pretty good at this point. I then use Market Samurai to do my keyword analysis. Another product I use for doing keyword competitive analysis is SEMRush. Both of these products are indispensable if you are a serious internet marketer.

When the keyword selection is finalized, you use these keywords to do the on page optimization of your website. The title should always be your most important keyword because this is the first thing the search engines read on your page – so it defines your page right from the start. Then you use the other keywords for the meta tags and header tags where possible, and try to work as many as possible into the page content.

And that gets down to writing content – and lots of it. The keywords are the foundation on which the content is built. That is why it is so important to select the right keywords because it is key that you will be able to generate content around those keywords. And you will need to have a variety of keywords that you can use to build content around.

We get asked all the time – do we have to write content everyday? Well, in my businesses I do, because I have found that the more content I write the more the search engines reward my efforts. But I work in some pretty competitive markets and to keep top positions requires a lot of effort. Plus, I truly am passionate about what I do and I find it somewhat easy to write about these subjects. But it is important to understand, what is ‘content’ and where do you create it.

The first place is in your blog, even if you have a static website, you should install a blog to add fresh content. This is what keeps the search engine spiders coming to your website. When they see a steady stream of fresh content, they keep coming back. The more often they come back, the more quickly your pages are indexed in the search engines. And the more quickly your pages are indexed, the more powerful your website becomes.

Other places to post content is on article directories, social bookmarking sites, Web 2.0 properties and more. There really are numerous places that you can choose to post content and while you can re-use some of the content from place-to-place, you will get real value out of having fresh content across various locations. Content is king on the internet, and the more you can create the better. Which brings us to the last point about what is website optimization.

Now that you have your targeted keywords and you have developed some content pages, you need to start promoting those content pages. In true SEO, this promotion is accomplished by building back links to the pages you want to promote with the keywords that you want to use to promote them. So a back link about ‘dog training collars’ should point to a page about ‘dog training collars’.

It is very difficult to say which element is the most important, but according to Google the quantity and quality of the back links to a website are the most important consideration when giving page ranking for keywords. Serious SEO marketers approach this fact with the perspective that there can never be too many back links and this becomes the primary objective for every keyword they target. Yes, they have to keyword research and write content, but SEO marketers understand that the real payoff comes from building backlinks.

Understanding the answer to what is website optimization is obviously very important if you are going to implement SEO for your website. It is actually a relatively simple process combined with a lot of hard work.

Let’s assume there is a targeted keyword for your business that gets 145 searches per day and you currently rank #98 in Google. Obviously, if someone has to surf through to the tenth page to find your website, chances are pretty high that you are not getting very much organic traffic for that keyword. So your baseline traffic is probably zero.

Now let’s assume that you implement a proven SEO process that will improve your website with high search engine positioning to where you are in the top five position and you are getting 20% click through on the 145 daily searches. Well you have just gone from zero daily clicks to almost 30 daily clicks for that keyword.

If you have done a good job of selecting your keywords, these targeted visitors are ready to take action. Perhaps they want to purchase a product that you are selling or perhaps they want to gather some more information. The landing page you take them to for that keyword can be a sales page or maybe even a lead capture page. The overall goal is to optimize your pages for the keyword that you are targeting and then build high search engine positioning for the page that best addresses what they are searching.

From a financial perspective, let’s assume that you have a product that you are selling for $100 each. Of the 30 daily clicks, you only sell 1.5 items per day on average (5% sales conversion). Well that means you have increased your daily sales by $150 per day, or over $4000 per month! Do the same thing for another couple of dozen more keywords or so and you might be on to something.

Too many times SEO is viewed as a technical issue when in fact it should be viewed as a marketing opportunity! Driving more traffic to your website is about increasing sales and should be given as much importance as any other marketing program within your company. And in today’s changing marketplace, high search engine positioning for your targeted keywords may be the best investment that you can make.

SEO – or search engine optimization – is widely misunderstood and it is overly exaggerated about difficult it is to ‘do’ SEO. Yes, it takes a lot of hard work, but the work itself is relatively simple.

Search engine optimization for a website comes down to three key elements. If you manage all of these three elements, then the SEO process just magically happens. It is sort of a self-fulfilling prophecy. If you follow the steps that lead you to SEO success, the SEO of your website automatically happens. It could not be simpler than that, so let’s take a look at the what those three elements are:

select keywords – Arguably the most important step of the SEO process, the keywords that you select are the foundation of your internet marketing and SEO strategy. The keywords you select must meet the following attributes:

targeted traffic – The keywords must generate targeted traffic to your website. In other words, if someone finds your website through a keyword search for a keyword phrase you are targeting, then the search must lead them to a page where they can find information about that particular search term. Otherwise you will get a lot of bounces and no real meaningful traffic.
traffic levels – The keywords also must generate sufficient traffic levels to make the keyword optimization worth the effort. Every market is different. Some markets have hundreds or even thousands of keywords to target, while others have a lot fewer. But you need to learn how to find the keywords that can drive enough traffic to your website.
competitive level – If you select keyword phrases that are too competitive, you will never be able to achieve a high enough page ranking to ever be found on the search engines. This is the real science of SEO, finding the keywords that drive enough traffic but are not so competitive that you cannot get high ranking. This is why the keyword selection process may take anywhere from two days to two months because each business is different and the competition of the keywords can vary greatly. Depending on the competitive nature, it might take a lot of ‘deep dives’ to come up with a list of words that arehave the appropriate comeptition level.
marketable – Are these keywords germane to your overall business strategy? In other words, are the targeted keywords marketable both inside the search engines and outside the search engines? The keywords that you select need to fit in with the overall marketing strategy of your business because as you will see below, there will need to be a lot of content created around the keywords that you select.

create content – On the internet and in the SEO world, content is king. Whether you are writing new articles for your blog, submitting articles to article directories, doing social bookmarking submissions, creating Web 2.0 pages, or any of the various methods of creating content on the internet – creating content is something you must do on a daily basis if you want to earn top search engine rankings. The content should be keyword relevant and should include various links back to the pages you want to target. You do not need to be a great writer to write good keyword relevant content. If you know the industry you are trying to see into, and understand the products you are trying to sell, you should have no problem being able to create good content that is useful to other people. And while that is important – that people find your content useful – it is also extremely important to understand that the search engines reward websites that submit a steady stream of fresh, new, uniqute, keyword relevant content.
build back links – Remember the old pop culture saying ‘the person who dies with the most toys wins’? Well on the internet, a similar saying is ‘the website with the most backlinks wins’. That is because the search engines see backlinks as a popularity vote and the more backlinks you have, the better. Also just as important is the quality of the backlinks. Backlinks from high ranking and high authority backlinks are more valuable to your search engine rankings than backlinks from low ranking websites. A good backlinking strategy will create backlinks from all across the spectrum – large sites, small sites, industry related sites, non-industry related sites, and so forth. There are multiple methods of creating backlinks including submitting articles to article directories, syndication of your content through various sources and other good link building strategies.

These are the three fundamental steps of SEO. Let’s make an analogy to golf – if you have the right grip, the right stance and the right posture, you will have a better chance of making the right golf swing. Get any of those three golf fundamentals wrong and you have made it more difficult to play golf well.

Well it is very similar in SEO. If you select the right keywords, create enough keyword relevant content and build enough keyword relevant backlinks – then you are destined for SEO success for your website. Make a mistake on any of those SEO fundamentals and you have made it more difficult to get recognized in the search engines.

How To Find Keywords Of A Website

Part of the keyword selection process is understanding who your competition is, what keywords they are targeting and why they are beating you in the search engines. Because of this you will need to understand how to find keywords of a website.

Depending on the internet browser you use (Internet Explorer, Firefox, Google Chrome, etc.) some of the details in this article will be different. But for the most part these instructions will work on all the different internet browsers.

The easiest and cheapest (free!) way to find the keywords of a website is to load the page in the browser and examine the source code. This is quite simple to do:

You can click on the ‘View’ button on the internet browser tool bar at the top of the page, the source code will open in a new window
You can hold the following keys down at the same time – and U – which will open the source code in a new window
If you are using an add-on toolbar, some of these have a ‘source’ button which will open the source code in a new window

Regardless of the method you use, once you get the source code opened in a new window you can examine the file to determine what keywords are being used.

If you have little technical background, do not worry about what you see in front of you. The source window shows the actual source code of the web page that you have opened. You do not need to be concerned about any of this as most of this is automatically handled for you, especially if you are using a blog as your website.

To find the keywords that are being used for this particular site, you simply need to find the following line in all this code: “meta name=”keywords” content= …”. To find it you can either scroll through the document looking for that text or by hitting (Ctrl F) and keying that text into the search box.

If you find that line of text, the keywords that are being used for that web page are found after the ‘content=’ text. What you find here will vary from one website to another depending on how well optimized a web page is. And you find a big discrepancy from one website to another. On some you will find that they have done no search engine optimization at all around the keywords (and they wonder why they get no traffic!). And on others you will find so many keywords listed that it is almost ‘spammy’.

That was the free and easy way which might work for a large majority of the time. In other cases you might want to dig a little deeper – for example, instead of just wanting to know which keywords a web page is targeting, you might also want to understand how what organic keywords that page is ranking for. One of the best keyword competition tools I have found is SEMRush which will provide a list of keywords where a particular website ranks in the top 20. This is very valuable information as you can ‘spy’ on your competitors to see what keywords they are getting high ranking. For only $67 per month, it is well worth price for the competitive knowledge you can get.

Another really good product for finding keywords and then doing extensive competitive analysis is Market Samurai. There is a lot of power with this product and if you are serious about building an internet business this is one of the core products you must have. First, the user interface is very good and allows you to start off with a keyword and then drill down into more keywords. That is great. But what is even better is the SEO competitive analysis tool that allows you to see at a glance how hard it might be to compete on a targeted keyword. All of this for a one time price of $149, it is simply genius!

The bottom line is that you will need to understand how to find keywords of a website specifically understand how competitive you need to be on the targeted keywords. Backlinks on a website are the result of another website ‘linking back’ to your website. They are also one of the most important ‘assets’ you can have for your online business.

This is how Wikipedia defines backlinks:

“Backlinks, also known as incoming links, inbound links, inlinks, and inward links, are incoming links to a website or web page. In basic link terminology, a backlink is any link received by a web node (web page, directory, website, or top level domain) from another web node.”

So that is the basic definition and is easy to understand. But the more important issue is the impact that backlinks have for your website. Again, from Wikepedia:

“Inbound links were originally important (prior to the emergence of search engines) as a primary means of web navigation; today, their significance lies in search engine optimization (SEO). The number of backlinks is one indication of the popularity or importance of that website or page (for example, this is used by Google to determine the PageRank of a webpage). Outside of SEO, the backlinks of a webpage may be of significant personal, cultural or semantic interest: they indicate who is paying attention to that page.”

Backlinks are seen as a vote of confidence by the search engines for your website. The more you have, the better – especially if they are spread wide across multiple websites. In other words, the search engines value those links more if they are coming from different sources.

That leaves one final question, which is how do you build SEO links? We are purists when we come to building backlinks, we do not believe in the quick fix of building 10000 links overnight. That is in fact very dangerous for your website because it will be tagged as spam.

The best and most sustainable method of building SEO backlinks include the following:

article submission – There are numerous article submission sites that you submit articles such as Go Articles, Articles Base, Ezine Articles, etc. Most of the article sites have high page rank and links back from their sites are very valuable for your SEO rankings.
social bookmarking – There are also numerous social bookmarking sites like Digg, Facebook, Twitter, Reddit, and many others where you can post links. If you are an internet marketer you need to get in the habit of posting your links to these sites because they get a lot of exposure in the search engines.
directory submission – Yeah we know, the boring old directory submission sites. But when you consider that most of the directory submission sites have high page rank (good) and low Alexa rank (even better!), then proper management of building SEO links with those sites are well worth the time.

Keywords are the foundation of a good SEO program. Pick the right keywords and you have solved a large part of the SEO riddle. Select the wrong keywords and you have potentially limited your success from the very beginning.

So what is the best way to find keywords for SEO? How do you determine which keywords are winners and which keywords are losers? There are four common golden rules that you should adhere to when picking keywords:

relevancy – The keywords you select must be relevant to the types of products or services that you are trying to sell. This seems like a pretty obvious statement but not everyone picks the best keywords that that drive ‘targeted’ traffic to your website. So the first rule is that you should start by identifying the keywords that are most relevant to the content on your website.
competition – This is an often overlooked step in the process for the very simple reason that many people do not know how to analyze keyword competition. Google provides their view of competition by providing the total number of websites that they have been indexed for that keyword. But that is only half the story. We have seen keywords that have a high Google competition ranking but are actually quite easy to get on the first page, and vice versa. That is because there may a keyword that has a lot of competing pages but no single page that is specifically optimized for the keyword. It is very important to understand how to analyze keywords in detail to select the right keywords for your website.
traffic – It is also very important that the keywords that are selected provide enough daily traffic. You must keep in mind that high daily searches for a keyword do not automatically translate into more traffic to your website. To get any significant piece of the traffic you need to be in the top 2 or 3 positions. So picking your keywords has to be a mix of how much traffic they provide along with how easy (or hard) it will be to get top position ranking.
value – The last rule is that the keyword must provide some value. There are two respects to this. One, are there products or services that you can sell to help them solve the problem that leads them to do a keyword search? And two, when people search on the keywords you are targeting, are they looking to buy something or are they just doing some research to gather more information. That makes a huge difference if you are trying to make money from your websites.

Most SEO companies follow the principles of these ‘golden rules’. But we believe it should be taken a step further to include other areas that you may want to consider when selecting keywords:

fits overall image of business – Are the keywords consistent with the overall image or branding of your company? If not then you need to do more research to make sure the keywords fit your overall company branding.
easy to create keyword relevant content – Since any SEO campaign will require a lot of good, fresh and unique keyword relevant content, the keywords need to be easy to write content about. There are many keywords that look good during the analysis but when it comes to writing content it is impossible to keep coming up with new ideas to say the same thing.
supports overall SEO strategy – Just as the targeted keywords should fit the overall branding of your business, the keywords should also fit within your overall SEO strategy. Content, linking and syndication all need to be part of your keyword selection process.

How To Check Page Rank On Google

This particular question requires multiple answers. When someone asks ‘how to check page rank on Google’, presumably they want to find out what is the page rank of the entire website using the Google ‘Page’ rank formula. But others may ask the same question wanting to find our what pages their keywords rank for in the search engines. We will address both of these answers in this article.

Google has an algorithm called ‘PageRank’ that was developed by Larry Page, one of the Google founders. Just coincendentally, the Page factor that is named after his last name also comes into play when ranking websites in the search engines. Many people who do not know that Mr. Page developed this algorithm normally assume that it is tied to what page your website ranks for the keywords you are targeting. It actually has nothing to do with search engine pages.

This is how Wikipedia defines the Google Page Rank Algorithm:

PageRank is a link analysis algorithm, named after Larry Page[1] and used by the Google Internet search engine, that assigns a numerical weighting to each element of a hyperlinked set of documents, such as the World Wide Web, with the purpose of “measuring” its relative importance within the set. The algorithm may be applied to any collection of entities with reciprocal quotations and references. The numerical weight that it assigns to any given element E is referred to as the PageRank of E and denoted by PR(E).

They go on to say more about the Page rank as follows:

A PageRank results from a mathematical algorithm based on the graph, the webgraph, created by all World Wide Web pages as nodes and hyperlinks as edges, taking into consideration authority hubs such as cnn.com or usa.gov. The rank value indicates an importance of a particular page. A hyperlink to a page counts as a vote of support. The PageRank of a page is defined recursively and depends on the number and PageRank metric of all pages that link to it (“incoming links”). A page that is linked to by many pages with high PageRank receives a high rank itself. If there are no links to a web page there is no support for that page.

To check your page rank is very easy. Just download the free Google toolbar for the browser that you use, for example Internet Explorer or Firefox. Once it is downloaded and installed, you will have instant access to the Google page rank for every website you visit. If you use Firefox another good free toolbar is the Live PageRank toolbar.

So now that we know what the Page rank algorithm is, how does it apply to your website? Well the first thing you should note is that the algorithm relies heavily on back links to individual pages of your website. That is why it is so important to build back links every day – the search engines like websites that have a continual stream of new back linking activities. Which leads us to the second interpretation of “how to check page rank on Google.

Most internet marketers have a large list of targeted keywords that they are trying to get rank. Without the proper tools it is impossible to track your ranking position for each keyword. So you need to invest in the proper tools to have the ability to analyze your current rankings for each targeted keyword, and then analyze the competition for those keywords to understand what it will take to achieve top positions.

There are two tools that we recommend for properly analyzing page ranking and comepetitive analysis for your keywords. Two thoughts before I say what they are: 1) there are free versions and paid versions of each, to get the full benefit of the solution you will want to have the full version, and 2) you do not have to purchase both of them at the same time but together these two products provide all the details you need to make analysis of yuor page rank positions for your keywords.

Market Samurai – Unquestionably the absolute ‘must have’ product for internet marketers. If you only purchase one product make it Market Samurai. This is the question every internet marketer has, how to be 1 on google search. It is the holy grail of search engine optimization, the ultimate achievement for every SEO professional. And the good news, it is more achievable than one might think.

There are billions of web pages on the internet, how could you possibly get number 1 ranking? Well if there are billions of web pages I would venture to guess that there are multiples of that amount of keywords. So there are probably more keyword search requests than there are qualifying pages. When there is no page anywhere on the internet that has the perfect level of optimization, Google makes the best assumption on which website deserves to get the top ranking. In many cases the website that gets the first position sort of wins it by default because of their strong rankings in other areas.

What that means to internet marketers and search engine opimization professionals, is that there is great value in doing extensive keyword research to find those keywords that have not been highly optimized for the search engines. In other words, when you can find keywords that pages have not been optimized with meta tags, header tags, etc., you have a realistic chance of getting number 1 position on google search.

There really are basic steps to do to learn how to be 1 on google search. They are documented in our SEO process, but the following is a summary:

detailed SEO keyword research – Notice the two keywords, detailed and SEO. To do a detailed SEO keyword research, it is not enough just to use the free Google Keyword Tool (although it definitely is worth using for certain situations). To go deep in SEO keyword research you will need to have details around number of daily / monthly searches and the number of competiting sites. You will want to have a tool that allows you to start with a keyword phrase, and then dig deeper with each iteration until you have found every possible variation of the original keyword phrase. That is called long-tail keywords and understanding how to find them is very important to your overall internet marketing success. The best product that we have found – hands down and there are no close seconds – is Market Samurai.
competitive analysis – While you are in the keyword discovery phase, you will run across keywords that on the surface look like they will be sure-fire winners. And some will turn out to be that way. But with further competitive analysis, you may find that just because they appear to be promising – that is, they have a low number of competing sites – they actually might be impossible to get high rank. It could be that although there are a low total number of competing sites there are enough that have been highly optimized for the keyword phrase that it will be impossible to take their ranking positions. Again, having the right tool is absolutely critical. We use both Market Samurai and SEMRush in our competitive analysis as they each offer something different that helps to see the total competitive picture.
